“All the wickets were special, but the wicket I enjoyed most was Sanju Samson’s”: Jai Moondra recalls his dream international debut

International debuts are high pressure moments anyway, but imaging making an international debut against not just the world’s best team, but also the reigning world champions.

For left-arm pacer, Jai Moondra, however, the challenge was never about the occasion, it was about staying true to the process.

Making his Ireland debut against the reigning T20 World Cup champions, India, the left-arm seamer could easily have been overwhelmed by the magnitude of the moment. Instead, he delivered a Player of the Series performance as Ireland completed a historic 2-match T20I series victory - the country’s first-ever series win against India in any format. In fact, before the win in the first T20I, the Irish had never beaten Indian in any format.

Yet, looking back, Moondra maintains his focus never drifted from the team’s objective.

Speaking to ETPL, the 29-year-old who hails from Tonk, in Rajasthan, said - “The series against India was special, but I tried to stay grounded through it all. It was a big occasion for me and for the team, and I just wanted to do my best and help the team in whatever way I could.”

While the individual accolades quickly followed, including being named Player of the Series on debut for his 5 wickets in the series, Moondra views the achievement through a different lens.

“Getting the Player of the Series on debut is something I am grateful for, but honestly, I was happier that Ireland won the series. It was a great feeling to be part of a historic achievement for Irish cricket. It was a team effort, and everyone played a part in that result.”

His humility has quickly become one of the defining characteristics of the young pacer.

Despite dismissing some of India’s biggest current superstars across the two matches, Moondra never allowed individual success to overshadow the collective achievement.

Among his wickets, however, one remains particularly memorable. And no prizes for guessing which one.

“Honestly, all the wickets were special, but the wicket I enjoyed most was Sanju Samson’s, mainly because it came with my first ball in international cricket. That was a special moment, but I tried not to get carried away and just keep doing my job. The main thing was helping the team get over the line.”

Behind the performances lay weeks of careful preparation. Making an international debut against one of the strongest batting line-ups in world cricket demanded far more than natural ability and talent. For Moondra, the foundation was built through conversations with experienced teammates and a commitment to keeping things simple.

“The advice I got from the senior players and coaches was to stay calm, stick to the plan and keep doing the simple things well. That helped me a lot, especially in high-pressure matches.”

Moondra’s preparation also extends beyond team meetings. A keen student of the game, he regularly analyses leading left-arm fast bowlers, not to imitate them, but to develop his own identity.

“I study left-arm pacers and try to learn from them, but I am not trying to copy anyone exactly. I want to build my own mentality, stick to the basics for longer periods and use the conditions, things like the wind, the ground dimensions and where I want batters to score to create opportunities.”

That clarity of thought has already taken Moondra from a dream debut to a maiden ODI call-up for the 5-match ODI series vs Afghanistan, which begins on Wednesday, August 5 and an ETPL contract with Rotterdam Dockers. More importantly, it has shown that composure, preparation and patience can be just as valuable as raw pace and the ability to swing the cricket ball.

Ireland’s historic series victory may have introduced Jai Moondra to the cricketing world, but his mindset suggests the breakthrough is only the beginning. With every spell, he continues to demonstrate that success at the highest level is built not on chasing moments, but on mastering the process.
