“Cricket has given me everything. If I can give back to the game…” What excites Ajinkya Rahane the most about playing in the ETPL

Former India captain, Ajinkya Rahane, arrives at the Amsterdam Flames with a career built at the highest level of the game, but his role in Amsterdam promises to extend well beyond what he can contribute with the bat.

For Rahane, the opportunity represents a chance to share nearly two decades of experience with a new generation of European cricketers while becoming part of a franchise driven by the same long-term vision that sits at the heart of the ETPL.

“Whenever I had that opportunity of sharing my experience, sharing my knowledge about the game, that always helped a player. When you share your experience with someone and that player ends up playing at the highest level, it’s a very good feeling to have.”

That experience becomes even more valuable when working with players from different cricketing cultures. Rahane has spent years playing alongside international cricketers in the IPL, while representing India across different conditions around the world. He understands the nuances of adapting to unfamiliar environments, dealing with pressure and preparing for different styles of cricket, knowledge he now wants to pass on to players across Europe.

“When you have that experience and when you share that experience, it’s really important. So this is a great opportunity for me to share my knowledge and the experience with the European players, with other players as well.”

That philosophy closely mirrors the wider ambitions of the ETPL. The league is not simply seeking to bring international stars into European cricket; it aims to create an environment where local and emerging players can learn from them, compete alongside them and ultimately become better cricketers.

For Amsterdam Flames, Rahane therefore represents more than a major signing. He brings an additional layer of experience to a franchise already being shaped around strong leadership, international expertise and a commitment to player development.

For Rahane, who played 195 international matches for Team India, this is also a golden opportunity to give back the game that he loves.

“I don’t want to keep it small. Cricket has given me everything. If I can give back to the game, to the players and share that knowledge, I think I’ll be more than happy.”

That may ultimately prove to be the most significant part of his arrival. The Flames have added a player with international pedigree, but European cricket has gained something potentially even more valuable: a mentor willing to invest his knowledge in the next generation.
