Two-time World Cup winning captain, Steve Waugh built one of the most successful Australian outfits in cricketing history through meticulous preparation, unwavering discipline and a culture that demanded excellence. Those same principles are now guiding his newest challenge of being Co-Owner of the Amsterdam Flames, one of six franchises set to compete in the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL).
For someone who has experienced almost everything the game has to offer, the ETPL Draft presented an entirely new test. This was his first experience of being part of a franchise-based league draft — a fast-paced format where careful planning can be turned on its head within moments as rival teams make their selections.
The former Australian captain though relished the challenge.
"You're right, it was my first draft experience. It's really interesting to see the way it played out. I think the one thing I learned about the draft process is there's a lot of work that goes in before it actually happens... Even today, you have to manoeuvre around and think on your feet and change things up. Really fascinating and interesting. It was great to be a part of." Waugh said.
His words highlighted what supporters rarely get to see on draft day. While the selections themselves lasted only a few hours, the groundwork had been laid weeks in advance. Waugh, along with the Amsterdam Flames' coaching staff and analyst, spent countless hours discussing player combinations, anticipating different scenarios and preparing contingency plans. That preparation was invaluable as the draft unfolded, with each franchise having to adapt as preferred targets disappeared from the board.
All six franchises though managed to build strong squads. In many ways, Waugh echoed the sentiments of all the franchises, stressing on the importance of building a comfortable space for all players, where they feel like they are part of something special.
"I'm really happy with the quality of players. Not only the skill set on the field, but the type of people we've selected. The culture of the team is really important to us. We want it to be something special to play for the Amsterdam Flames." Waugh said.
The players who were either pre-signed by the Flames or picked up in the draft would be more than happy to hear that. While the franchise represents Amsterdam, its identity extends well beyond the Netherlands. A truly global squad, it features players from a number of cricketing nations, as the Flames try to create a mix of cultures and experiences that reflect the international character of the ETPL itself. Waugh hopes that diversity will not only make the team stronger on the field, but also allow the franchise to connect with supporters worldwide.
Instead of narrowing their focus to one fanbase, the Amsterdam Flames want to be a truly global team. With players from countries including the Netherlands, Australia, England, New Zealand, Nepal, Canada and Italy, the franchise hopes fans will find personal connections with players from their own countries while also embracing the wider vision of European cricket.
“We have the Dipendra Singh Airee from Nepal so we want all the Nepalese to support us. Yuvraj Samra from Canada, we want Canadian to support. Ali Hassan from Italy, so we want Italians to support us. We want global support.”
That ambition aligns closely with the ETPL's wider objective of accelerating the growth of the game across Europe. By bringing together established international names and emerging local talent, the league is creating new opportunities for players while introducing fresh audiences to cricket in Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.
For Waugh, the draft marked the beginning of a new journey rather than the end of one. The strategies have been discussed, the squad has been assembled and the foundations have been laid. Now, attention shifts to the field, where the Amsterdam Flames will look to turn careful planning into match-winning performances. If Waugh's remarkable and highly decorated cricketing career is anything to go by, preparation and culture will remain at the heart of everything they do.
