“Things are happening fast”: Jai Moondra reflects on a whirlwind couple of months that have changed his life entirely

A few weeks can truly change a career. 

For Jai Moondra, the last few weeks have changed everything.

The Irish left-arm pacer announced himself on the international stage during Ireland’s historic T20I series victory over India, getting a chance to earn his debut cap primarily because as many as six first-choice picks were missing due to injuries. And in the process he has earned widespread recognition for his performances in one of the country’s most memorable white-ball triumphs.

Thanks to his performances in that 2-match T20I series that also saw him walk away with the Player of the Series award, Moondra found himself becoming the first pick of the Rotterdam Dockers in the first-ever ETPL Player Draft.

Soon after, another call-up.

The 29-year-old from Tonk, who had moved to Ireland just a few years ago to study and work, received his maiden ODI call-up for the upcoming five-match home series against Afghanistan, which begins on Wednesday, August 5 in Bready.

For a player whose Irish cricket journey began only a few years ago, when he joined the iconic Leinster cricket club, the past couple of months have been nothing short of extraordinary.

“Things are happening fast. First of all, that T20 series win against India was an amazing feeling and an amazing achievement for whole Irish cricket. And looking forward to the Afghanistan series as well,” Moondra told ETPL in a special interaction.

His performances against reigning T20 world champions, India, showcased the qualities that have quickly made him one of Ireland’s most exciting pace prospects. Composed under pressure and capable of delivering crucial breakthroughs, Moondra played an important role in helping Ireland secure a landmark series victory over one of cricket’s global powerhouses and the number one ranked T20I team in the world. The displays not only strengthened his position within the national setup but also caught the attention of ETPL franchises.

Yet Moondra’s story stretches far beyond recent performances. Unlike many international cricketers who progress through established academies from childhood, his route to the highest level was shaped by perseverance and patience.

“Cricket in Ireland came into my life gradually. I came here in 2021 for studies and work. While I was building that side of my life, I joined Leinster Cricket Club where I was trying to keep playing and trying to improve as a cricket player too.”

Balancing a corporate career while pursuing professional cricket is rarely straightforward. The demands of work, training and competition often require sacrifices that go unseen. For Moondra, progress came steadily rather than instantly.

“There were lots of ups and downs along the way, but I kept just hanging in there doing the Work. I am thankful that the opportunity to play at international level eventually came through Cricket Ireland.”

That persistence took him from club cricket to the international arena, as he stands poised to make his ODI debut as well, while still soaking up praise from all quarters for playing an unforgettable role in Ireland’s historic T20I series victory over India. In less than a month’s time he will have the opportunity to showcase his talent in the ETPL with the Rotterdam Dockers.

The journey is still in its early stages, but the trajectory is unmistakable. From balancing studies and work after arriving in Ireland to representing his adopted country on the international stage, Jai Moondra has already proven that opportunity rewards those who are prepared to embrace those opportunities with open hands.

With Ireland, Rotterdam Dockers and a maiden ODI series now ahead of him, the next chapter promises to be a very, very exciting one.
