Why ICC Named Cyprus Europe’s Top Nation for Cricket Development

The Cyprus Men's National Cricket Team is currently ranked 53rd in the ICC T20i team rankings, a historic high for the island nation. But that is not the only indication of the giant strides that the sport has been taking in recent years, both on and off the field in the country which is geopolitically divided into two regions. Cyprus Cricket was recently recognised as Europe’s leading nation for cricket development by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Cyprus was picked as recipient of the ICC Regional Development Initiative award - an honour that acknowledges outstanding programmes delivered by Associate Members to grow the sport.

The award recognises innovative and impactful development initiatives via physical participation programmes and digitally delivered projects. The award was essentially conferred due to the Cyprus Cricket Federation’s sustained efforts to expand cricket across the island and the wider European region.

In recent years, Cyprus Cricket has delivered a series of significant development programmes, including hosting the ICC Coach Level 2 Course for the European cohort and conducting a technical course supported by Olympic Solidarity funding. The Federation has also invested heavily in grassroots growth through teacher training initiatives designed to introduce cricket to new participants and strengthen development pathways.

The ICC recognition celebrates a period of sustained activity for Cyprus Cricket, which also successfully hosted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifiers. The event highlighted the Federation’s ability to deliver major international tournaments while continuing to promote the growth of cricket at the local level.

The ICC award also serves as acknowledgement of the Federation’s long-term commitment to develop the game through education, participation and capacity-building programmes.

With the announcement of the ICC Regional Award winners, Cyprus has officially been recognised as a leader in cricket development across Europe, underlining the progress made by the Federation in recent years and its growing influence within the region.

This is yet another milestone for Cyprus Cricket as they continue their efforts to expand participation, develop coaching and officiating talents, and create new opportunities for the sport throughout the country.
