JJ SMUTS

Jon-Jon Smuts is one of the most experienced and decorated all-rounders in the Southern African T20 circuit, and a player whose longevity and consistency across multiple franchise leagues makes him a vital asset for the Edinburgh Castle Rockers. Born on 21 September 1988 in Grahamstown, South Africa, the right-handed batter and slow left-arm orthodox bowler has been a fixture in South African domestic cricket since 2007.

Smuts made his T20 international debut for South Africa in January 2017 and went on to represent the Proteas in 17 T20I appearances, scoring 233 runs and taking 5 wickets. He was named the South African Cricket Association's Most Valuable Player for the 2018/19 domestic season and was one of South Africa's Cricketers of the Year in the 2018 Annual. After his last appearance for South Africa in 2021, he later became eligible to represent Italy, making his debut for the Azzurri in February 2026.

At franchise level, Smuts has spent the better part of a decade as one of the leading performers in South Africa's domestic T20 competition. He was the leading run-scorer for a Durban-based franchise in the inaugural edition of the South African T20 league and was part of the Eastern Cape franchise that won the title in 2023. Across more than 24 appearances in the South African T20 league, he has contributed consistently with both bat and ball.

At 37, Smuts brings experience that money cannot buy. A right-hand bat and a left-arm spinner who has seen everything the T20 game can throw at a player, he is the steady, canny presence every dressing room needs when the pressure builds.
